Soliciting Public Comment on CORE WaiverOn May 1, 2014, the CORE districts submitted a joint request to the U.S. Department of Education to extend the School Quality Improvement System into and beyond the 2014-15 school year, including several proposed amendments to the system. These amendments were approved by CORE’s Board of Directors and included in the extension submission to the U.S. Department of Education. As the original CORE Waiver and the subsequent amendments represent a working/living concept for improving and supporting our schools, we invite public comment on the proposed amendments to the CORE NCLB Waiver. Visit http://coredistricts.org/school-quality-improvement-system/ to review the amendment letter submitted to the U.S. Department of Education along with a redlined copy of the CORE Waiver.
Public comments can be submitted by clicking here, emailing core@caedpartners.org, faxing (916) 244-0250 or via regular mail to 1107 9th Street, Suite 500, Sacramento, CA 95814. Comments submitted by June 9, 2014 will be considered alongside the findings from the U.S. Department of Education’s CORE Waiver 2014 Monitoring Report (released on May 9, 2014, click here to see a sample report), as CORE’s Board of Directors considers adjustments to these amendments and as the Board considers potential additional amendments.
While the CORE districts can seek amendments to our waiver in order to better meet the needs of our students and our school communities, we will do so in line with the original intent and foundational concepts of the CORE Waiver. We also need to be mindful of federal guidance on ESEA Waivers. The U.S. Department of Education will consider each of our amendments, though it is possible that some of them will not be approved, in which case the original language in the CORE Waiver will remain intact.
