  • Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports in Action

Jefferson students who earn Jagspots, get to enjoy their “Lunch on the Lawn”. Lunch on the Lawn is one of the rewards that students can earn by displaying our ROAR tenets, Responsibility, Obedience, Attentiveness, and Respect. When a staff person, or a student leader catches a student displaying one of the four behavior expectations, they reward that students with a “jagspot”. When students earn enough Jagspots, they can use their reward to have lunch on the lawn with their good friends. Students can also earn prizes, first in line privileges, or even admittance to the WII Dance Parties! Stay tuned for more of Jefferson's PBIS plan as staff works together to develop an environment of Positive Behavior.

  • The Common Core Standards in Action

Ms. Dougherty’s students recently gave presentations on ideas they came up with for a fundraising effort to supply a bus for a field trip to the Honda Center. This field trip represents our partnership with the Anaheim Ducks, and included physical fitness and leadership training, as part of the Duck’s program, The Captain’s Challenge. The transportation to the Honda Center is reimbursed, however, the school must come up with the initial funds. The students decided to devise fundraising activities, but had to present their ideas to Mrs. Ford for approval. Their presentations had to include details, costs for materials needed, and the amount of funds their activities would raise. Students worked in collaborative groups to ensure they had the details they needed to convince Mrs. Ford that their project was sound. Each group did a great job, and there will definitely be a field trip to the Honda Center in their future!

  • Revised Dress Code

The mission of the Santa Ana Unified School District is to provide a world-class education that prepares students for college and career. To ensure that all students are learning and thriving in a positive, safe environment, our District has two policies related to dress codes: 1. a Uniform Policy and 2. a Dress and Grooming Policy. Each school has been asked to review its practice of both polices to ensure the school community is aligned with the District’s policy which is based on California Education Code. Our school staff believes that when students wear uniforms, there is an increased sense of community and pride in our school. This Uniform Policy will contribute to the health and safety of our students and to the development of a productive learning environment. Please take a few moments to review our school’s revised uniform list that is enclosed. Be assured that the revised list will not require you to purchase additional items; it simply provides more options. Parents, who have or who wish to request an exemption for their student not to wear the school uniform, must adhere to the enclosed Dress and Grooming Policy, which requires that all students wear proper and appropriate dress while in attendance in school and at school sponsored activities. If you are considering opting your student out of the K-8 Mandatory Uniform Dress Policy, please feel free to contact the school office so that we may facilitate your request. Click here to see our revised policy effective immediately.

Principal's Message

  •  Fernando Duran
It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve our community during this my second year as principal of Jefferson Elementary School.

I have been most impressed with the rigor of our academic programs and the variety of student and parent engagement activities that support student success. I have also been impressed with the outstanding behavior of our students as they follow our rules of Respect, Obedience, Attentiveness, and Responsibility. Jefferson has a dedicated and talented group of teachers and parents who are motivated to help every student achieve. My sincere thanks to all those who make these valuable opportunities and experiences possible for our students.

With the infusion of Local Control Funding Formula funds and the generous support of our District, we have been able to provide digital devices for each student with seamless internet access.

The digital devices and the internet have opened access to a vast world of information for both teachers and students. With an emphasis on the 3 R’s - reading, writing, and arithmetic, we are also preparing our students to fully participate in today’s global community, teaching them the 4 C’s – creativitycritical thinkingcommunicationand collaboration.  Students in our Dual Immersion program are also learning to be globally competent by learning the bicultural and bilingual skills that will help them succeed in a hyper-connected world.

For those who are new to our school, I would like to give you some background on my professional accomplishments. I have had the privilege of holding a variety of education jobs in three different countries. I taught Middle School in Spain, teaching Language Arts in Spanish and French as a Foreign Language prior to moving to Belfast in Northern Ireland, where I learned English while teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language. I moved to the United States in 1989 after being hired as a Bilingual Teacher in Paramount Unified School District. I transitioned to Santa Ana USD in 1997, where I began my administrative career as an Assistant Principal, first at Pio Pico Elementary and then at Washington Elementary. Three years later, in 2000, I was appointed principal to open Grant Elementary, and the following year, in 2001, I was transferred back to Washington Elementary where I served as principal before coming to Jefferson in 2015.

I also hold a Ph.D. in Educational Policy, Planning, and Administration from the University of Southern California, where I conducted my dissertation exploring “Factors Contributing to the Academic Excellence of English Language Learners.”

By choosing Jefferson Elementary School you are selecting a school that is committed to preparing your children to master the knowledge, skills, and expertise that they need to achieve success in college, work and life. I encourage you to visit our school or explore our website site and Facebook page to find out more about what we have to offer.

    Best Wishes,
