830 Students Participate in Santa Ana Unified School District’s 2020 Mardi Gras Classic Speech and Debate Tournament
Twenty-seven schools and 830 students participated in the recent SAUSD Mardi Gras Classic Speech and Debate Tournament at Santa Ana High School. The auditorium was at capacity on the floor level, with students cheering for winners from all teams.
Both top schools in the tournament were SAUSD schools.
The two-time defending National Championship squad from the Advanced Learning Academy won the tournament with 244 points.
The speaker of the tournament went to Abdiel Ramirez, who won three 1st place trophies.
Other winners:
- Sierra Preparatory Academy won the small school division
- Martin and Roosevelt finished second and third in the elementary division
- MacArthur finished third, Villa finished fifth, and Santiago finished third in the small school division
The Santa Ana Unified School District’s national award winning Speech and Debate program has grown to include hundreds of students in elementary, intermediate and high schools across the District; students have begun to break into the upper echelon of speech and debate nationwide.
The Santa Ana Kiwanis Club has supported the program since its inception.
