Update: AB 469 Reminder: SAUSD Seniors Required to Submit Financial Aid Applications by May 2, 2024

Update: March 26, 2024

Dear 12th Grade Parent or Guardian,

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) determines a student’s eligibility for financial aid to assist with a student’s attendance at a college or career school. California Education Code (CEC) § 51225.7 and Board Policy 6146.1 requires each 12th-grade student complete and submit the FAFSA or CADAA, unless the student is determined to be exempt, or an opt-out form is completed.

The Financial Aid Application deadline has been extended from April 2, 2024, to May 2, 2024. This extension was as a result of the passing of Assembly Bill 1887, which was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on March 25, 2024. This bill takes effect immediately.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application (CADAA) determines a student’s eligibility for financial aid to assist with a student’s attendance at a college or career school. California Education Code (CEC) § 51225.7 requires each 12th-grade student complete and submit the FAFSA or CADAA, unless the student is determined to be exempt, or an opt-out form is completed.

In addition, completion of a Financial Aid application is necessary in order to qualify for federal student aid such as grants, work study, and loans. Many states and colleges use the FAFSA information to determine eligibility for state and school financial aid. Students who were brought to the United States under the age of 16 without proper visas/immigration documentation can apply for financial aid by completing the CADAA by April 2, 2024.

All seniors must complete the FAFSA/CADAA or submit the signed SAUSD FAFSA/CADAA Opt-Out Form by April 2, 2024. Seniors can opt-out on their own if they are an emancipated minor or 18 years or older.
