    FACEMASK GUIDELINES

Despite ongoing outreach and improving COVID-19 vaccine access, a significant proportion of Californians throughout the state are not yet fully vaccinated. The Delta variant is two times as contagious than early COVID-19 variants, leading to increasing infections. The foundational principle of the facemask guidance is to allow all our students to have access to safe and full in-person instruction and to as much instructional time as possible. SAUSD Facemask Requirements

SAUSD School Sites & Childcare Settings: SAUSD will require all individuals, students/staff/visitors, to wear a facemask while indoors at ANY SAUSD school site or childcare setting, REGARDLESS of vaccination status, as mandated by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).  FACE SHIELDS are not a substitute for facemasks.  See below for details.  Click here for more information on the CDPH COVID-19 Public Health Guidance for K-12 Schools in California.

SAUSD Administrative Offices: SAUSD will also require all individuals, students/staff/visitors, to wear a facemask while indoors at ANY SAUSD site or administrative office, including the Chestnut District Office, Support Services Office, and Building Services offices, regardless of vaccination status.  FACE SHIELDS are not a substitute for facemasks.  See below for details.

    FACE SHIELDS

Face shields are not a substitute for facemasks, but can be worn as an additional layer of protection. Face shields may be considered for members of the public who cannot wear a face covering due to a medical condition or other exemption.  See below for additional exemptions.

Parents/Students:  As required by CDPH, an exemption will require a certification from a physician, nurse practitioner, or other licensed medical professional practicing under the license of a physician.  TO BE CONSIDERED for a mask exemption by the District, the "Student Mask Exemption Request & Medical Certification Formmust first be completed by the student’s legal guardian and health care provider.  The completed form must then be submitted to the school nurse for approval.

Staff Members: A request for an exemption must be first submitted to the SAUSD Covid Task Force for approval.   If the School Nurse/Covid Task Force approves you to use a face shield only, then your face shield will have to follow the CDPH face shield guidelines.   As required by CDPH, this exemption will require a medical note from a physician, nurse practitioner, or other licensed medical professional practicing under the license of a physician. The approval will also be given in writing (No verbal approvals will be given).
