    The Safe School Ambassadors (SSA) program empowers leaders from the diverse groups and cliques on campus and equips them with nonviolent communication and intervention skills to stop bullying and violence among their peers. 

    How do I become a Safe School Ambassador, and what does it entail?

    In the beginning of the year, a group of students will be chosen to be part of a 2-day SSA program training. Students will learn the role of becoming effective ambassadors through interactive exercises/activities, powerful videos, role plays, and thought provoking discussions lead by a dynamic, Community Matters trainer. Training focuses on: Community Building, Understanding the Problem of Mistreatment, Motivation to Act, Action/Skills, and Implementation. The idea of the SSA program is that a group of trained students will learn how to talk to other students in order to prevent and stop acts of cruelty. In a nut shell, ambassadors help their friends make better choices about how to treat others, and help them avoid trouble in school and out in the community.

    What are Safe School Ambassador events?

    Ambassadors plan two annual Action "Snapshot" Campaigns. These campaigns take place over one-to two-week intervals, during which Ambassadors document each intervention they do on a Action Log. At the end of the campaign, all Action Logs are tallied and assessed, and useful information is shared with school officials. 
     
    How often do Ambassadors meet?

    Ambassadors are divided into Family Groups and meet either weekly or biweekly, depending on what their family group decides. Their are also All Ambassador Meetings scheduled three times a year, and a fieldtrip is usually involved. 

    Impact of the Safe School Ambassadors program:

    • Reduces bullying, including cyberbullying
    • Increases student reporting to adults
    • Reduces put-downs, harassment and fighting
    • Improves school climate and student retention
    • Reduces gang involvement and activity

    Safe School Ambassadors have:

    • High social status and influence in their peer groups
    • Strong communication skills and an outgoing personality
    • Empathy and compassion
    • A history of standing up for their friends and peers
