ERWC 12
Expository Reading and Writing Course (ERWC) prepares college-bound seniors for the literacy demands of higher education. Through a sequence of eight to ten rigorous instructional modules, students on this yearlong, rhetoric-based course develop advanced proficiency in expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. Students will be expected to increase their awareness of the rhetorical strategies employed by authors and to apply those strategies to their own writing. They will read closely to examine the relationship between an author’s argument or theme and his or her audience and purpose; to analyze the impact of structural and rhetorical strategies; and to examine the social, political, and philosophical assumptions that underlie the text. By the end of the course, students will be expected to use this process independently when reading unfamiliar texts and writing in response to them. ERWC is designed to fully align with the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) framework for English Language Arts and the California English Language Development Standards. English 9
The English 9 Thematic Units takes students through literature and informational texts to gain an understanding of the importance of feeling empathy for others, of assuming the responsibilities of leadership, of pursuing dreams, and of feeling the power of love. The four units for this course are, Unit 1: Empathy examines how human compassion informs our understanding of humanity and the world. Unit 2: Leadership focuses on the idea of governing and asks the Essential Question: What are the responsibilities of power? Unit 3: Dreams and Aspirations examines what makes a dream worth pursuing. Unit 4: All for Love asks students to consider the unit’s central question–How are we affected by the power of love?–and provides a range of texts, including the most famous one about love–Shakespeare’s Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet–as well as current scientific texts that are attempting to find an answer to why we love. StudySync is designed to fully align with the California Common Core State Standards (CCSS) framework for English Language Arts and the California English Language Development Standards.
