INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (grades 6-8) - Teacher: Mr. Axtel

Beginning Strings: This class is designed for students new to the Mendez String program.  This class teaches reading and playing techniques for violin, viola, cello, and bass.  Music reading basics are emphasized and beginning ensemble music arrangements are performed in the second semester. 

Intermediate Strings: Prerequisite for this class is one year of Beginning Strings or teacher recommendation.  Music reading is more complex and requires playing multiple scales.  Students will perform in a winter and spring concert. 

Advanced Strings: Prerequisite for this class is one year of Intermediate Strings or teacher recommendation. Students will perform multiple scales in two octaves and are eligible for the Santa Ana Unified School District Honor Orchestra. Several performing opportunities are offered throughout the year including four school wide concerts. 

Beginning Band: This class is designed for students new to the Mendez band program.  This class teaches reading and playing techniques for flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, baritone, trombone, tuba and percussion.  Music reading basics are emphasized and beginning ensemble music arrangements are performed in the second semester. 

Intermediate Band: Prerequisite for this class is one year of Beginning Band or teacher recommendation.  Music reading is more complex and requires playing multiple scales.  Students will perform in a winter and spring concert.
