Below are the course descriptions of the elective classes available to you at Saddleback High School.
All students must enroll in core classes (English, Math, Science, and PE.) based on District Guidelines. Electives are selected on your assigned registration day. Please review the information below to help you make a successful selection.
The last slide has your counselor's information. Please email your counselor with questions or if you would like to discuss your schedule further.
Art Graphics
This course introduces students to the art of graphic design. Students learn about the history and development of this art form, explore cultural influences and examine its role in societies from different parts of the world. Study the aesthetics of art and graphic design will allow students to develop perception and analysis skills that they can employ to critically examine their own work and the work of others. Students will demonstrate their knowledge of the elements of art and principles of design while developing and refining their creative skills utilizing a variety of media including digital.

Drawing and PaintingDrawing & Painting is a studio project-orientated class exploring different media areas of 2-Dimensional Art. The emphasis of this course is to expose students to 2D art medium, vocabulary and artists to build their creative skills through the elements and principles of design. These projects will be mostly 2D work. Projects may include observational drawing, perspective, portraiture, illustration, watercolor, colored pencil, tempera, and acrylic.

3D Art & Design3D Art & Design explores different media areas of 3-Dimensional Art. The emphasis of this course is to expose students to 3D art mediums, vocabulary, and artists to build their creative skills through the elements and principles of design. These projects will be mostly 3D work. Projects may include observational drawing, perspective, portraiture, illustration, watercolor, colored pencil, tempera, and acrylic.

Band (Marching/Concert)SHS Performance Ensemble marching band performs throughout the school year at their own competitions, football games, basketball games, assemblies, and community events in Santa Ana. A large amount of performance and travel opportunities in and out of state. Open to students of all skill levels. It involves all the band instruments, the drum line, and the color guard. Concert band classes work alongside the marching band course as well as prepare music for traditional concert settings. Regardless of your skill level, you can fully participate in all activities, learn lifelong skills, and join the SHS band family to create irreplaceable high school memories. Beginning InstrumentsBeginning instruments involves all band instruments regardless of your skill level you can fully participate, learn lifelong skills, and if interested in furthering your musical skills. Mixed ChoirThese classes are for anyone who is interested in learning how to sing, read music, strengthen vocal techniques, and breath support. The Women's Chorus is a beginning group, Chamber Singers is an auditioned group that performs at festivals and school assemblies and Show Choir is more focused on singing musicals and performing more musical theater with choreography. These are performance-based classes that require you to perform at concerts after school and sometimes during school or class time. We build a community and family atmosphere for all students who join.

DramaThis class is for anyone who is interested in performing on stage, on camera, or working backstage. Students will learn basic theater techniques, play theater games, create comedy sketches, film commercials, and perform on stage. Students will have an opportunity to participate in a play and/or a musical over the course of the school year, so anyone who is interested in acting, singing, dancing, directing, or working backstage is encouraged to choose this elective! We build a community and family atmosphere for all students who join to feel safe to try and experience new things. No experience is required.

PLTW: Biomedical PathwayIn the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine the factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

ASB - LeadershipThe Associate Student Body (ASB) is in charge of hosting school events, assemblies, and dances. The class's purpose is to increase school spirit in all the ways possible and to help create unity among all students on campus. ASB offers and participates in community service, in and out of school, and is involved in decision-making for all class activities.

A.V.I.D.A.V.I.D. (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. At Saddleback High School, students have the opportunity to work with college tutors, tour different college campuses, and listen to guest speakers. A.V.I.D. is a"family" that sticks together and supports one another both personally and academically.
