Mr. V

    Meet Mr. Velasco

I was born in East Los Angeles in 1976. The last of three children, whose parents immigrated to this country in search of a better life. Their search for that "American Dream" took them from Los Angeles to New York. Finally my mom and dad settled in Burbank California where I started school as a Spanish speaking Kindergartner. Learning English was difficult for the first few years but with the help of my father and older sisters I soon picked up the language. I attended Burbank Schools until finally graduating from Burbank High School in 1994. After graduation I Spent 3 years in Northern California attending Humboldt State University where I played Division III NCAA Football. After three years I transferred over to Cal State Fullerton where I received  a degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in Child Development.
During the summer of 1992 I applied to work at a summer camp as a camp counselor. I was only 16 at the time but I was very curious about working as a mentor to younger children. After that summer it became very clear to me that I had discovered not only a new talent but a serious passion for working with children. As soon as I could I applied and started working as an Instructional Assistant for the Santa Ana Unified School District. After three years as a teachers aide, I applied for an Emergency Credential and started my career as a teacher at Walker Elementary in SAUSD. After 6 years as a 1st grade Bilingual Ed Teacher, I was transfered to Villa Fundamental where I have worked ever since. My years here at Villa have been among the most rewarding and exciting years of my life.
While studying at CSUF I met my beautiful wife Yadira. As soon as we graduated in 2000 we married and moved to Santa Ana. We bought a home and spent 4 years working together as teachers at Walker Elementary. We have two lovely daughters who attend Santa Ana schools.
I have many passions aside from teaching. I have a serious addiction to music. I strum my guitar whenever I get a free couple of minutes. I spend as much time as I can arranging, producing and mixing music. I also run a small business called "World Beat Entertainment" providing services as a mobile DJ and MC. Music has always been an important element in my classroom. I try to incorporate it into as many lessons as I can.
