CONGRATULATIONS TO THE MOST INSPIRATIONAL SANTIAGO STAFF OF THE MONTH
The following teachers received awards as the most inspirational staff for the month of October, being nominated by students whose lives were impacted by these teachers. Ms. Monette (intermediate ELA teacher), Ms. Jones (intermediate Science & Math teacher), Mrs. Parkinen (2nd-grade teacher), and Mrs. Andersen (2nd-grade teacher).

2019 FACE Parent Conference
Santiago School Networking with the Community
Santiago School was well represented at the School Choice Fair that took place at the 2019 Family And Community Engagement (FACE) Conference last Saturday, Sept. 28th. Parents were able to look at what each school in the SAUSD has to offer. Besides the school choice fair, there was also the Community Resource Fair and numerous workshops offered to parents to help their children succeed in school. Thanks to all the parents who attended the conference and to all the volunteers who helped out at the event.
Santiago Wellness Center Grand Opening, Parent UniversityWorkshop & PTA General Parent Meeting Well AttendedThe Parent University Night and the PTA General Parent Meeting were engaging. Santiago AVID students were presenters to the parents at the Parent workshop. A Ribbon Cutting was also performed to open the Santiago Wellness Center.SANTIAGO FIRST SPEECH & DEBATE TOURNAMENTThe Santiago speech and debate team is off to a great start after the first tournament of the year. The tournament took place last Saturday, Sept. 28th at Godinez High School, and we had 20 individuals competed and 15 of those 20 went onto at least semi-finals. This year's Speech & Debate team is coach by Ms. Angelina Venturelli, our new intermediate ELA teacher.Semi-Finalists: Travis Prough, Alexa Prado, Edith Mendez, Ashley Miranda, Melanie Moran, Tamara Juarez, David Chavez and Jose Cervantes.Finalists: Logan Casillas, Miguel Muro, and Alex PantoneFirst Place Champions: Arianna Ramirez, Tony Pantone, Xitlally Cantoran, Anais MartinezThe other students who competed and tried their very best in their first tournament include: Anthony Navarro, Eduardo Suarez, Yvette Flores, Danykaly Chea, and David Ocampo.CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL FOR A JOB WELL DONE!
The "WE Care" Campaign at Santiago
On September 11th, Santiago recognized World Suicide Prevention day, our student know this as the "WE care" campaign at school. The students wore yellow and "hearts on their sleeves" as they celebrated kindness, promote emotional well-being, and encourage connectedness among your fellow classmates.
SANTIAGO AVID BUDDIES HARD AT WORK
Ms. Monett’s 7th grade AVID students visited our 2nd grade classes every Wednesday to assist their second grade buddies with writing & reading.
Civic Education and Early Literacy Interventions
Our 8th graders are paired up to work with 1st grade students as upper grade peer mentors to help develop early literacy in our younger students. Thank you 1st grade teacher Mrs.Lugo and 8th grade teacher Mr. Peterson.
Scholars Provided Creativity Opportunity in STEAM LabMrs. Andersen's 2nd grade class utilized the STEAM Lab and took part in the Child Creativity Lab program. The STEAM workshop provided highly engaging opportunities for the students. This is just one of the many things that the PTA does for our Santiago Scholars! Sign up to help in your student's class!First Grade Science Lesson on DecomposersMrs. Lugo's class were excited in learning about decomposers and how they help our world by breaking down waste! The class's favorite decomposers are the worms. Worms are able to give back nutrients to the soil after they decomposed food scraps and other organic waste. For a STEAM activity, Mrs. Lugo's class decided to design, create and build their our own decomposers.
Santiago Art Masters Features Artist Roy Lichtenstein
The Santiago Art Masters program recently held an assembly introducing the life and work of our featured artist, Roy Fox Lichtenstein, an American pop artist. All our students participated in the Meet the Masters visual arts program and then did an in-classroom art project that reflects the style, medium, and artistic techniques of Roy Lichtenstein. Mrs. Andersen’s 2nd graders proudly presented their artworks.
Hero Officers Teach the Importance of Details
School Police Officer Nadeau and Officer Limon taught 8th graders the importance of details. Students read “Tell Tale Heart” and then did a police report on the crime scene. The officers went over why it is important to tell only the facts but give all the details. After today’s lesson, students will follow up with an essay from the attorney’s perspective by pleading a case for the narrator. Thank you, Ms. Monette, for hosting our Hero Officers and allowing them to be teachers in the classroom!
Santiago Intermediate Cross Country Team Meet, October 2nd at McFadden
This Cross Country season was a great success due to the dedication of our athletes. Most of our cross country runners place in the top 20, with Morgan Nelson placing 4th for 7th grade boys. The cross country team ended the season with a run to Angel's Stadium! Run as One, Work as a Team, Finish like Family!

Santiago Drama Announced the Cast for the Disney Cinderella: KidsCongratulations to the cast of “CINDERELLA: Kids!” and thanks to everyone who auditioned! This is Santiago’s 4th year participating in the Disney Musicals in Schools Program. We had 100 3rd-5th grade students auditioned for the Cinderella and 60 students were chosen. Save the date, January 23-25, 2020 for the production of Disney Cinderella: Kids.

PTA's Biggest Fundraiser of the Year!
SUPPORT OUR SANTIAGO JOG-A-THON, OCTOBER 18th
On Friday, October 18th, Santiago Scholars will walk, jog & run for a good cause to support our great PTA programs! This is PTA's biggest fundraiser of the year and laps will again be counted so volunteers are needed at the event. Volunteers are needed from every class to help count laps and make sure that this is a great Jog-a-thon!

Santiago students and staff are participating in National Red Ribbon Week from October 21-25. Red Ribbon Week is observed to promote drug awareness and prevention. During Red Ribbon Week, our Santiago Student Council will be sponsoring a "Spirit Week". So join with us and promote “Red Ribbon Week".
