Mrs. Katanya Goodheart

  • Mrs. Goodheart is from Arizona and it was always her dream to move to California to teach and be close to her LA Lakers.  She knew she wanted to be a teacher ever since she was a sophomore in high school and took a summer job as a dance instructor. For six years, she choreographed dances for children, culminating in a recital to end summer. She loved knowing she was making a difference in their self-confidence and ability to make sure any student could learn anything with the right attitude.

Mrs. Goodheart is currently working on becoming a Google Certified Educator- Level 1 and has been recently trained in Nearpod and Flocabulary.  Over the last three years at ALA, Mrs. Goodheart has had her students participate in daily blended learning missions in ELA and Social Studies at ALA Elementary.   She engages students using AVID strategies through technological programs such as Kahoot, Flipgrid, Quizizz, and Explain Everything.   However, her favorite part of the day is during ohana or family time when students reflect on what they have learned and how they are feeling.  They problem-solve using the “Mamba Mentality” into whatever situation arises.  This is the idea inspired by Kobe Bryant that whatever you dream, you can make happen with the right mindset. One of her favorite Kobe quotes is, “Great things come from hard work and perseverance. No excuses,” and the idea that failure is an opportunity. She doesn't allow her students to be satisfied with good enough.

Even though she demands much from her students, she doesn't let it get in the way of entertaining interactions and comfort with her students.  She has a shark puppet that lets struggling students know they are on her shark radar and she will help them out during Google Meets.  She hopes that her students will say that whether they were in her classroom or virtual meetings, that they always felt loved and that if they could dream it, believe it, then they could do it!

When not teaching, Mrs. Goodheart enjoys the same “Carpe diem” (Seize the day) attitude when spending time with her husband and daughter. They love watching the Lakers or Dodgers, doing anything outdoors like hiking or volleyball, preferably at the beach, and road trips. Mrs. Goodheart’s hobbies included reading, karaoke, dancing, drawing, crafting, swimming, cutting hair, and traveling.  There are never enough hours in the day, but she is taking advantage of any spare time while on quarantine through technology by learning how to speak Italian and playing the guitar.
