Have your updated class list and your buddy's class list in your Disaster Backpack. Also have a list of your ELD group in case the disaster happens during the block instruction. Update your list every two weeks.
Have extra pens, pencils and first aid supplies in your Emergency Backpack.
The first priority is to evacuate as soon as it is safe to do so. Train students who can lead the class out to the playground. The teachers are to be the last one out of the room.
On your way out, check for your buddy. If his/her class is still in the building, have them follow your class.
If a student is injured and cannot be moved, the teacher must stay with the child and wait for the Search and Rescue Team. The Instructional Assistant or buddy should accompany the class to the evacuation area. Students should not go alone.
Close but do not lock the door.
At the Emergency Assembly Area, do the following: 1) Take attendance; 2) Fill out the Accountability Form; 3) Send it with a student to the Emergency Operations Center; 4) Report to the Emergency Operations Center if you were assigned to a team. Before reporting make sure your buddy is in charge of your class. Do not report directly to your duty station because it may be necessary to make reassignments based on available staffing.
Report to the Emergency Operations Center after you finish any assigned duties, and then return to your class.
Supervise and reassure students. Listen for instruction.
Prepare to entertain your students for a long time. Have activities ready they can do while waiting to return to the main building. Have a piece of cloth or bedspread to sit your students while they are waiting.
