The program has two components.  There is a total communication program for students who require sign language to access language and the curriculum.  "Total Communication" is the use of multiple modalities such as signing, listening and speaking, and a variety of signed communication systems. There is also an oral program for students who can access the curriculum through spoken language and listening.

Taft DHH Program pursues excellence in Deaf education by developing English literacy, problem solving skills, and academic and social growth in the least restrictive environment, thereby providing each student with the opportunity to develop his or her fullest intellectual and personal potential to function as a contributing member of a changing society. This process includes highly trained and experienced staff using the best programs and materials obtainable with total dedication to the students. Learning environments have been created that support students in a fair, equitable, and respectful manner utilizing a rigorous curriculum that meets the California Standards for Academic Performance.
