AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination
AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID's systemic approach is designed to support students and educators as they increase schoolwide/districtwide learning and performance.
Our nation’s schools are full of students who possess a desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard, but many of them do not truly have the opportunity to be college-ready. These are often the students who will be the first in their families to attend college and are from groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID Secondary is designed to set students on a path to college and career success.
The AVID Elective course provides students with the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. AVID Schoolwide can have an effect on the entire school by providing classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that can be incorporated into any classroom to improve engagement and success for all students.
At MCHS we enroll all of our students in AVID elective to ensure the support they need to be successful in their college courses at Santa Ana College. Further, teachers are trained in AVID strategies to ensure consistent support and scaffolds for all of our students.
