Santa Ana Unified’s comprehensive high schools hosted students from their feeder intermediate schools the morning of March 22, 2017 as part of the annual eighth grade visitation day. A variety of activities took place at each of the high schools, giving prospective students a glimpse of the many opportunities that will be available to them in high school.
More than 300 SAUSD students gathered at Santa Ana High School on March 11, 2017 to compete in the Santa Ana Unified School District/Santa Ana Kiwanis Club “Mardi Gras Classic” speech and debate competition for intermediate schools. In total, 310 students participated from Advanced Learning Academy, Carr Intermediate, Esqueda K-8, Lathrop Intermediate, Martin Elementary, MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate, McFadden Intermediate, Mendez Fundamental Intermediate, Sierra Preparatory Academy, Villa Fundamental Intermediate, Willard Intermediate and Santiago K-8.
Student artists from across SAUSD were honored during the 5th Annual Artspiration celebration March 23, 2017 at Bowers Museum. The event, held by SAUSD and the Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation, highlights the success and creativity of the arts. The night began with a student art exhibit and ended with an awards ceremony. Reprints of student artwork were also sold, with proceeds going back to support arts education in SAUSD.
Santa Ana Unified's National School Breakfast Week contest has concluded and the winners have been announced! Thanks to our schools' dedication, excitement and drive, overall breakfast participation increased by 6.4 percent from March 6 to 10, 2017. The following winning sites have earned a delicious barbecue for their students and faculty: Lincoln Elementary, Davis Elementary, Thorpe Fundamental Elementary, Saddleback High School, Willard Intermediate, Sierra Intermediate, Sepulveda Elementary and Diamond Elementary.
Student Josue Luis, of Martin Elementary School, was recognized March 10, 2017 at the Association of California School Administrators Region 17 Every Student Succeeding breakfast at Bowers Museum. The program honors students at all grade levels who have succeeded against all odds. He was nominated by Martin Principal Peter Richardson. Josue was born with various physical challenges, including that his arms are not typical. But during his five years at Martin, he's desired to do everything that his peers do.
Through a partnership between Santa Ana Unified and Santa Ana College, SAUSD graduates can attend their freshman year for free and receive a laptop when they enroll at Santa Ana College full-time. The program is called the College Promise, meaning it's a promise and a guarantee from the District and College to ensure that students have access to attend college and achieve their dream careers. Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips this week recorded a new video for the SAUSD community highlighting the benefits of the partnership, which was also the subject of a free breakfast meeting for students at Santa Ana High School on March 17, 2017.

Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Soccer Team at Godinez Fundamental High School for becoming the 2017 State CIF Regional Division 2 Soccer Champions! They beat out approximately 600 other schools in the Southern Region for the title. Congratulations to the players, Coach Ruben Fernandez, and the rest of the coaching staff for their hard work and dedication that resulted in a successful season!
Two Santa Ana Unified schools - Santiago K-8 Elementary School and Spurgeon Intermediate School - are in the running for grants through the ScholarShare Scholar Dollars contest and are asking the SAUSD community to vote for them daily through March 24 to help them win. Winners will be determined based on the number of votes they receive during the voting period, which ends March 24. To provide an opportunity for students to have direct contact with staff and volunteers to learn more about the Promise, the partners have teamed up with IHOP, the Downtown Santa Ana business community and community organizations to host a free breakfast from 8:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Santa Ana High School, located at 520 W. Walnut St. in Santa Ana.
