Mrs. Peterson teaches 10th grade English and 11th grade AVID. She epitomizes excellence in teaching, holding her students to high standards both in and out of the classroom. She serves as advisor to the Journalism Club and Vocal Velocity. Her personalized and focused instruction has led to our students' success on the CAHSEE test in ELA and increased scores on students' PSAT tests. She inspires her students to work hard to achieve both academic and personal success. She is truly a stellar educator and member of the MCHS family.
An original "Wizard", Mrs. Espinosa has served MCHS for the past 17 years as our Counselor. She works closely with students and parents to assure that they are on track to high school graduation and college success. She often spends evenings providing workshops to parents and students in the college application process that results in our students' dream of college acceptance come true. This year MCHS will have the highest number of AA candidates (47) in MCHS history. She is an extraordinary counselor and vital link in MCHS's history and success!
Mrs. Groff, our Biology and Senior AVID teacher, will be honored at the March 25th Board of Education Meeting for being selected for the Carlston Foundation Teaching Excellence Award. Mrs. Groff was nominated by former student Heriberto Olive (seen in the photo to the right with Mrs. Groff) who wrote about how Mrs. Groff made the difference in his life and goals. She will receive $5,000 which she intends on spending on science equipment for her classroom. Congratulations Mrs. Groff!
Welcome to the Middle College High School website! It is an honor to have the opportunity to serve this outstanding community centered around student success. It is my hope that after you visit MCHS’s website, you will leave understanding the positive environment we offer for our students to grow both personally and academically. We are proud of the accomplishments of our students and staff and want to share that pride with all who visit us here on web.
As you navigate through our website, you will hopefully see that the students, staff and parents work hard to establish academic excellence as our school’s hallmark. We are also proud of our extraordinary partnership with Santa Ana College that opens the door to higher education and educational opportunity to our students.
However, we also understand that there are dynamic changes taking place in K-12 education and the world. To stay abreast of these changes, we are working hard to provide our students with the cutting edge educational experiences it take for our students to be successful citizens in today’s global arena.
To that end, MCHS continues to provide effective academic programs as we transition to the new Common Core State Standards. Our teachers have already begun to align their instruction around these new standards that will complement the rigorous learning taking place in the college courses that our students take here at SAC. In addition, we will continue with our outstanding AVID program that supports our students both academically and in preparing for college.
Outside the classroom, MCHS offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities with many clubs and organizations, service community opportunities and school spirit activities. Most recently, our students competed against three other schools in the District in the “Got Milk” challenge and worked hard as a student body to emerge as the winners of the $3,000 grand prize.
History of Name
Middle College High School (MCHS) is a Santa Ana Unified School District school, located at Santa Ana College. A collaborative venture between the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) and Santa Ana College(SAC), opened its doors in 1997 with approximately 80 sophomores and a staff consisting of four teachers, a high school counselor, a principal and two classified employees. In 2000
Our students are very active in the governance of our school and in the programs of the college. They participate in a range of MCHS and SAC clubs and activities. Service learning, community volunteerism and leadership activities reinforce our students' abilities to apply academic skills and concepts in life experiences. Student activities include ASB, school dances, lunch time activities, and class competitions to bring our students together in a fun and positive manner.
Parents play a significant role in our success. Parent leaders participate in School Site Council and the PTA in an effort to work with MCHS staff to provide community resources for their children. Monthly parent meetings are well attended and focus on student support and college information themes. The meetings inform and engage parents in their child's educational plan.
Since the implementation of our focus on standards based instruction and assessment, the MCHS Academic Performance Index (API) has improved from 728 in 2003 to 850 in 2009, a gain of 122 points. In addition, we have celebrated a 100% pass rate on the California High School Exit Exam for the past three school years. This data demonstrates that our efforts are closing the achievement gap for our students to provide access to higher level learning in high school and college. MCHS has increased graduation rates, provided support to our students for them to persist in rigorous high school and college courses, and instilled in them a commitment to earn a college degree.
The Middle College High School community at Santa Ana College is proud of our academic accomplishments. In 2007, 2008 and 2009, Middle College High School was recognized as a National Title I Achievement School by the California Department of Education (CDE). Only two schools in California received this honor. We have also been recognized as a 2009 California Distinguished School, and a 2009 National Blue Ribbon School for our work in closing the achievement gap. In 2008 and 2009, U.S. World and News Report listed Middle College High School as a Silver and Bronze Medal winner, one of the top schools in the country.
