Principal's Message

A Message from Linda Bell, PrincipalL. Bell

Our school year is well underway and our students are off to a very good start. After beginning with a review of previously learned concepts teachers have moved students rapidly into rigorous, grade-level instruction. In all classrooms, teachers are designing learning activities that require students to apply higher levels of thinking and students have learned about scholarly traits that will guide their work habits. At each grade level, teachers have been collaborating to ensure uniformly high standards across the grade level and to plan the implementation of Common Core units of study. Our support staff is working closely with classroom teachers to assist students in need of additional support and to provide intervention instruction that is focused on closing the gaps in learning.

Our updated Mandatory Uniform Dress Code was recently sent home, reflecting unlimited color choices for solid, collared shirts. We are hoping that with  the expanded color choices, that our fundamental school parents will choose to have their children participate Jim Thorpe Fundamental School's Mandatory Uniform Dress Code. Our staff does believe that when students wear uniforms, there is an increased sense of community and pride in our school. Additionally, our Uniform Policy will contribute to the health and safety of our students and will support a productive learning environment. In wearing our uniform, students may feel more like a scholar, dressed for their day of learning. For families "opting out" of the Uniform Policy, the District's Dress and Grooming Guidelines was also sent home.

If you wish to know more about the work being done at our school, please feel free to call our office at (714) 430-5800. Information about upcoming events is also available by visiting the PTA page under Organizations.

Jim Thorpe Fundamental School is one of seven fundamental schools in the Santa Ana Unified School District—three fundamental elementary schools, three fundamental intermediate schools, and one fundamental high school.

We are an alternative school whose parents have voluntarily enrolled their children in our program. As a fundamental school, our emphasis is on establishing an atmosphere of fair, firm, consistent discipline and support that promotes academic achievement, patriotism and the development of student pride and responsibility.

Upon enrollment and at the beginning of each school year, parents and students sign the Fundamental School Agreement to support school policies and procedures. These include high expectations for attendance appropriate behavior, adherence to the school uniform and non-uniform dress codes, parent involvement in homework supervision, and regular communication between home and school. Since Thorpe is not a neighborhood school, parents are responsible for student transportation to and from school.

jt wheaties boxThe school was named after Jim Thorpe, the famous athlete and Native American who won Olympic gold medals in 1912 in the Pentathlon and Decathlon field and track events. In January 2002, Jim Thorpe was named the ABC Wide World of Sports' Athlete of the Century. His dedication, perseverance, and outstanding accomplishments are the inspiration for our school’s goal of “Aiming High” with every student “College Bound.”

Construction for Jim Thorpe Fundamental School started in August 1997 and with the school opening on September 7, 1999. The school is a two-story facility consisting of 55,000 square feet on 6.6 acres on the corner of Greenville and Alton streets. There are 35 classrooms, a central two-story, circular library, a multipurpose room with a stage, administrative offices and a food service area with a covered lunch area.
