Jim Thorpe Fundamental is a dynamic, high performing, National Blue Ribbon school where academic excellence is promoted.

We are a devoted community of students, staff and parents working together to benefit all our children. Our staff is filled with dedicated professionals who develop innovative ways to better serve our students in being prepared for college and career. We are all working to teach "21st Century Skills." This includes, but is not limited to skills of collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem solving. We want students not only to be able find answers to questions, but to also be able to ask the right questions, as well as to get excited about finding their own answers. We want students to be creative and be innovative and excited about learning.

We are committed to communicating with and engaging parents as partners. We recognize and value the importance of parent involvement because parents are teachers too. Parents are welcome at school and in our classrooms. We believe children do better when parents are informed and involved. We count on parent support to help us accelerate gains in student performance. Find out how you can get involved on the PTA (Parent Teacher Association), ELAC (English Learners Advisory Committee) and SSC (School Site Council).

We invite you to learn more about our school through the information on this web page. Thank you for your interest in Jim Thorpe Fundamental School.

Jim Thorpe Fundamental School is one of seven fundamental schools in the Santa Ana Unified School District—three fundamental elementary schools, three fundamental intermediate schools, and one fundamental high school.

We are an alternative school whose parents have voluntarily enrolled their children in our program. As a fundamental school, our emphasis is on establishing an atmosphere of fair, firm, consistent discipline and support that promotes academic achievement, patriotism and the development of student pride and responsibility.

Upon enrollment and at the beginning of each school year, parents and students sign the Fundamental School Agreement to support school policies and procedures. These include high expectations for attendance appropriate behavior, adherence to the school uniform and non-uniform dress codes, parent involvement in homework supervision, and regular communication between home and school. Since Thorpe is not a neighborhood school, parents are responsible for student transportation to and from school.

jt wheaties boxThe school was named after Jim Thorpe, the famous athlete and Native American who won Olympic gold medals in 1912 in the Pentathlon and Decathlon field and track events. In January 2002, Jim Thorpe was named the ABC Wide World of Sports' Athlete of the Century. His dedication, perseverance, and outstanding accomplishments are the inspiration for our school’s goal of “Aiming High” with every student “College Bound.”

Construction for Jim Thorpe Fundamental School started in August 1997 and with the school opening on September 7, 1999. The school is a two-story facility consisting of 55,000 square feet on 6.6 acres on the corner of Greenville and Alton streets. There are 35 classrooms, a central two-story, circular library, a multipurpose room with a stage, administrative offices and a food service area with a covered lunch area.
