SAUSD HOLDS INAUGURAL ETHNIC STUDIES CONFERENCE AT SANTA ANA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
More than 70 Santa Ana Unified students took part in an inaugural Ethnic Studies Conference at Santa Ana Valley High School on June 3, 2017. In preparation for the event, students identified and researched various community problems - from health care disparities to gang violence - and proposed solutions to them. Groups of students presented their findings during the conference.
SAUSD is in its second year of offering an Ethnic Studies class; it is in place at six schools.
“We are excited about having this conference because it is where the students get to display all of their work,” said Linn Lee, Curriculum Specialist for High School Social Science. “A lot of the ethnic studies course is based on developing their students’ identity, their voice, their concerns, and how is it that they can turn that into some positive change in their community...This is a great way to get students to understand that they have an impact in their society in whichever way they’d like to.”
