SAUSD INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS LEARN EARLY THE SKILLS OF LEADERS WITH SPEECH AND DEBATE PROGRAM
In 2014, Forbes Magazine published an article by business consultant Robert Sher titled, “How to Find the Millennials Who Will Lead Your Company.”
The Santa Ana Unified School District is also embracing speech and debate and the benefits it provides in preparing students for the 21st Century workforce with the launching of its own speech and debate program at the intermediate level.
The idea began during the 2015-2016 school year when the District partnered with the Kiwanis Club of Santa Ana to host a pilot program at all intermediate schools in the District as a way for students to develop and perfect their communication skills, which are highly valuable in the workplace.
In March 2016, more than 100 students demonstrated the art of speech in debate in their first tournament. The event was so successful that the District decided to create a permanent program which now includes 11 intermediate level teams.
The program is off to a great start. Students have already had the opportunity to compete in two tournaments at McFadden Intermediate School and Santa Ana High School. In March 2017, they will have another opportunity to compete before the District finals in May.
The winners of the District finals will represent SAUSD at the National Speech and Debate Association National Championship Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.
“What we are witnessing is the power of what happens when a community comprised of teachers, parents, administrators, and non-profit organizations work together to provide our students an experience that builds skills that will last forever,” said Sal Tinajero, SAUSD program specialist.
In it, Sher said that many business leaders are frustrated in their attempts to find Millennials who have the potential to lead their companies in the future, and offered them this tip. “Hire those who competed in speech and debate competitions as students. They all come dressed like business executives, and they have a deep understanding of how to persuade, how to present clearly, and how to connect with an audience,” he wrote.
