SAUSD Wins Historic Preservation Award
The Santa Ana Unified School District received the 2020 Historic Preservation Award from the City of Santa Ana’s Historic Resources Commission for the restoration and preservation of the Pacific Electric Sub-station No. 14, located on the campus of Garfield Elementary School.
This historic Pacific Electric sub-station that once served the “Red Car” railway system in Orange County, is now home to the Wellness Center at Garfield. With direction from the Board of Education and input from the community and the historical society, the 113-year old building has been fully renovated and equipped with a bathroom, kitchen and storage space.
District officials, including Superintendent Jerry Almendarez, and other award recipients were honored by both the Historic Resources Commission and the Santa Ana City Council. In addition, they received a plaque commemorating their contribution to the City and to preserving Santa Ana's historic resources.
