  • Century Senior Overall High School Winner at Litcon

Jackline Tello, a senior at Century High School in Santa Ana, entered SAUSD’s first literary arts competition, LitCon, and was the overall high school winner for her piece of prose, “A Story.” She and other student finalists read their work at the Frida Theater as part of Boca de Oro. “My teacher told me about [LitCon], and I thought, ‘Why not? It’s my last year here, I’ll go do something,’ ” Tello, 17, said. She had previously tried creative writing in her classes, but the Boca de Oro festival marked the first time that she shared her work in public. “I think it’s inspiring to know that there’s a community of other writers and artists here that you can reach out to for support,” Tello said. “And for the artists, they can come here and show what they have, so they can have a bigger audience.” When asked about whether she will pursue writing once she graduates this spring, Tello said that she’s considering it. “It’s one of those things where I’m like, ‘I could do this,’ ” she said. “I have a bunch of interests, and this is one of them.” As printed in LA TImes, Daily Pilot by ALIESE MUHONEN.
