Social Media Use & Community Engagement Policy

The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) uses official social media platforms to celebrate our schools, students, staff, and community, and to share timely, meaningful information about our schools, programs, and services. These platforms are an extension of the District’s communication efforts and are intended to support student learning, family engagement, and community connection.

Purpose of SAUSD Social Media Platforms

Consistent with Board Policy 1114, official SAUSD social media accounts are used to:

  • Highlight student achievements, school events, and staff contributions

  • Share important updates, announcements, and public information

  • Promote community involvement and collaboration

  • Support the District’s vision, mission, and educational goals

By creating and maintaining official social media platforms, SAUSD intends to provide the public with a limited forum to access information and share comments related to the District’s programs, services, and operations. Participation on these platforms is encouraged when comments are relevant to the stated purpose of the page and conducted in a respectful manner. SAUSD reserves the right to moderate content to ensure discussions remain appropriate, lawful, and consistent with Board policy and applicable regulations.

Expectations for Engagement

SAUSD encourages civil, respectful, and constructive engagement on its social media platforms. We welcome thoughtful dialogue and community participation that aligns with the purpose of our pages.

All users are personally responsible for the content they post and should be mindful that social media is public in nature. Content posted on SAUSD platforms may be considered a public record subject to disclosure under the California Public Records Act.

Content Moderation and Prohibited Activity

To maintain a safe, respectful, and informative environment, SAUSD reserves the right to remove comments or restrict access to users whose posts do not align with Board Policy 1114 or the purpose of District platforms.

The following content will not be tolerated and may be removed. Repeated or severe violations may result in users being blocked:

  • Obscene, defamatory, or libelous language

  • Personal attacks, harassment, threats, or intimidation

  • Hate speech or discriminatory comments targeting individuals or groups

  • Content that encourages unlawful activity or poses a risk to student or school safety

  • Content that disrupts school operations or interferes with the educational environment

  • Spam, commercial advertising, or solicitations not related to District business

  • Posts that disclose confidential or private information about students, staff, or families

Employee and Student Conduct

District employees and students are expected to follow all applicable laws, Board policies, and administrative regulations when engaging with social media. Posting prohibited content may result in disciplinary action in accordance with District policy.

Privacy and Confidentiality

SAUSD is committed to protecting the privacy rights of students, families, staff, Board members, and community members. The following guidelines apply:

  • Student images and information are shared only in accordance with Board Policy 1113 (District and School Web Sites) and applicable privacy laws

  • Confidential information about students, employees, or District operations may not be shared on social media

  • Personal contact information, including home addresses, phone numbers, and private email addresses, will not be posted

Administration and Oversight

The Superintendent or designee oversees official SAUSD social media platforms and establishes content guidelines and protocols to ensure responsible use and compliance with law and Board policy.
