Spurgeon Intermediate (Spurgeon) is located at the corner of West Fifth Street and North Fairview Street. We have been proudly serving our community since 1974.
Spurgeon Intermediate utilizes Project Based Learning (PBL) in both 6th and 7th grades. Through PBL our students engage in learning
activities that are more richly rounded; that are soundly tied to the Common
Core State Standards; and, that help our students to generalize their learning
across multiple disciplines. In addition
to PBL, Spurgeon utilizes AVID
strategies school wide. Our focus for
the 2016 - 2017 school year is on the WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration,
Organization, and Reading) strategies. Permeating
all of this is a commitment to continually work on the 5 C’s (Critical
Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, Creativity and Civic Engagement). All of these uniform strategies help us to
continually improve the rigor of our learning experiences across all
disciplines.
Beyond PBL and AVID, Spurgeon Intermediate offers a wide range of Project Lead the Way (PLTW) course offerings. We offer Robotics, Coding, Energy and Environment, Medical Detectives, and Flight and Space. The last three of these courses are embedded into our science course offerings. All of these courses engage students in a rich and rewarding alternative to traditional elective experiences. Importantly, they also provide a launching point for our students on a path toward a relevant college and/or career area that is of high interest for them. Each of the course offerings at Spurgeon can be explored further as the students matriculate to high school and college.
We proudly offer a two-year Spanish course for our students. Students who complete this course enter high school with the equivalent of one year of foreign language credit. This allows them to level up in high school, preparing them to take Advanced Placement (AP) classes earlier than they otherwise might have. Importantly, this class also provides our students with an opportunity to learn about and honor the heritage and background of a significant majority of students at our school.
Spurgeon also proudly offers a range of Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) classes. These include beginning and advanced art; a full range of choral classes; and, music classes, including orchestra. Our students in these programs perform both at the school and in the broader community. As with our other electives, our curriculum is designed to prepare students in these courses to enroll in progressive levels in high school and college.
A course offering that we are very proud of is our Ethnic Studies course. This course is designed to help students to gain a broader and more well rounded understanding of the challenges and interplay of larger societal issues. Students gain this understanding through in depth study of different cultures and cultural mores. This course utilizes the PBL model to make these studies more directly relevant to our students and the broader community. Students in Ethnic Studies often work with our Social Justice Club to identify and tackle issues that are directly relevant to the Spurgeon and Santa Ana communities.
Underlying all of the course offerings at Spurgeon is a complete compliment of services for our students with special needs. At every level and in every core subject we offer collaboratively taught classes and/or targeted support with the classes themselves. Our students with special needs are supported by a capable team of expert teachers and support staff; by a school culture of inclusiveness; and by systems and structures that maximize their ability to succeed.
Crucial to all of the academic offerings at Spurgeon is a school culture that is built upon consistent school wide behavioral expectations and social emotional support systems. Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) underpin our efforts to help our students to become capable and engaged citizens. Our students know and live by PAWS (Positive, Attentive, Willing and Safe) during the school day, and we hope beyond.
In addition to the academic offerings at Spurgeon we have a wide range of extra-curricular offerings and a robust catalogue of student led clubs and organizations. Our students enjoy a full complement of sports teams and competitions. Our Associated Student Body (ASB) offers a multitude of student leadership opportunities. Our clubs range from those that explore current popular web based gaming to those, like our Rainbow Warrior Club, that works to expand inclusiveness of students in the LGBTQ community. We also have an active Speech and Debate team.
Beyond the course offerings, it should be noted that we have state of the art technology available in our classes and in common labs for students. Additionally, we are a one-to-one Chromebook school. This means that we provide a Chromebook, or equivalent, to any student who wants one for the school year. We also provide Internet Hotspots that families can check out from our library to access instructional material from home. Several years ago our school underwent modernization. Our facility is designed to maximize student engagement and learning in a variety of state of the art classroom and school environment. Tapping into this resource we have created Flexible Learning Spaces for our students. These are areas where those students who have earned A’s and B’s can work independently in a comfortable setting that is outside of the classroom.

For those parents and students who need after school activities we have a partnership with the Engage 360 Program. Through this program students receive help in academic classes and they enjoy a wide range of excellent personal growth opportunities through things like Mariachi, martial arts, science cube, therapeutic art, and dance. Students in our Engage 360 program are supervised from 2:17 – 5:45 pm Monday through Friday by a trained and motivated staff.
Spurgeon is the place to be, the place to become and the place to belong. We have a caring, committed and capable staff who are all focused on helping our students on the path to college and career readiness. Our teachers are experts in their fields who regularly engage in voluntary professional development. Our students are skilled communicators who are creative, collaborative critical thinkers. They demonstrate their leadership capacity and citizenship daily. And, they take active roles in helping our community (civic engagement). We are very proud of them! Our parents are involved and an integral part of the successes that we achieve for their kids in our partnership for ongoing academic and personal growth and development.

We Did It!
All right Cougars, it is truly hard to believe but there are only three days left in the 2016 – 2017 school year. Time flies fastest when we are experiencing things that are good and that we like. There is much that has been good about this year and much to celebrate. Here are just a few of those things:
· This year we have 274 students who were eligible to participate in the 8th grade activities. Last year there were only 150 students who were eligible. The cut off was determined by the number of demerits that they earned (or avoided earning). The same cut off was used this year as last year and Mrs. Lloyd tells me that we have actually been much more strict this year than last. Great job 8th grade team! Great job class of 2021! Great job Cougars!
· The next data points are grades. Here it’s easier to use a chart:
|

Total F’s |

· The data trend for grades is clear. There are more A’s and B’s and fewer D’s and F’s. Thus, grade wise, more kids were successful this year. Wow! Great job Cougars! Our kids, teachers, staff, parents and community deserve the credit for this.
· There are some other data points that are worth looking at in a chart. These have to do with adds and drops, McKinney-Vento enrollment; Foster enrollment and numbers of students returning to us from charter schools. Here’s that information:

· Now we look to some discipline data. Here again a chart is telling (granted it only takes a simple chart to see the successes here J):
· This chart of referrals is even more telling when you realize that there are fifteen extra school days reflected in this data for 2016 – 2017 (those days are in August). This means that our kids are having less behavioral challenges than in previous years. This stands to reason when we look at the grade distributions. Kids can only do better when they are focusing on learning. When they are focusing on learning they have less behavioral challenges. This means that our adults are doing a great job setting up meaningful structured learning environments and tasks that challenge kids but that are achievable. Again, Great Job Cougars!
· Another point of progress can be seen in our MAP scores. We made growth across the board on MAP. Importantly, we made our projected growth in reading with our 7th and 8th graders. And, we made our projected growth in math with our 8th graders. One more time, Great Job Cougars!
· This year we reclassified 13.4% of our English Learners. Si Se Puede!
· Working with our community partners we have distributed over 80,000 pounds of food and clothing aid to our students and families this year. That’s a monumental feat (one which we hope and plan to continue next year)!
· We are sending the first two Spurgeon students to the National Speech and Debate Competition that is taking place in Birmingham, Alabama. One of our participants has never flown on a plane before. These girls are giving up participating in our promotion ceremony to represent Spurgeon and Santa Ana in this prestigious event. We are proud to send these kids and wish them the best. I told them to do well but to remember to have fun during this once in a lifetime event J
There are many more markers of success than those listed above (many many more) both in the quantitative data and in the qualitative data. I have shared some of those in previous Cables. And, I know that there are moments of success and triumph that remain invisible to all but a few that happen daily here at Spurgeon. This is one of the beauties of working with kids in a school. Some successes and celebrations are public and easy to see. Others happen more intimately, like those that happen in a conversation between a teacher and a student; via a student finding the courage to tackle a problem that might have seemed insurmountable previously; via an interaction between an adult and a student in crisis that results in things being stabilized; via a student who had been closed to interactions who finds the courage to ask for help; via a student rising to their personal best because they were inspired by the positive praise and work of the adults in our building.

Buen trabajo Cougars.

2015-2016
2014-2015
Number of referrals

y cuidados. ¡Hemos tenido un gran año! Espero con ansias aún mejores cosas en
2017 - 2018!
¡Que tengan un verano maravilloso!

A Series of Unfortunate Eventsby Daniel Handler Year Published: September 30, 1999A book series I recommend is A Series of Unfortunate Events. This series is one of the best books I've ever read. I haven't had the chance to read them all because I can't find them. The books are about the unfortunate events of Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire trying to find a safe guardian after their parents have perished in a house fire. Meanwhile, a sinister man named Count Olaf is trying to steal the Bauldelaire fortune. These books are not too big nor small and they can be easy AR points. The author of these books is amazing. When there is a word that some of the characters say, the author will define it by using other examples. The way he describes every scene makes you feel like you're in the books. All in all, I highly recommend A Series of Unfortunate Events. Oscar Martinez 8th Grade |

Percy Jackson and the Olympiansby Rick Riordan Year Published: 2005Looking for a good book to read? I recommend the Percy Jackson and the Olympian Series. I'm pretty sure you'll like them. It's about how Percy Jackson learns he's a demigod and the son of the almighty sea god, Poseidon. In this series Percy and his best friends, Annabeth and Grover, fight monsters and fulfill prophecies. All leading to a full on war with the Titans. Percy lives a life full of life threatening moments which will leave you on the edge of your seat. I had fun reading this series and I'm sure you will too! Amy Nieto 8th Grade |
